The project

ForHousing recently completed a new development on Edison Road in Eccles, Greater Manchester. The project consisted of 51 affordable homes: 42 apartments, seven three-bedroom homes, and two four-bedroom houses.

They approached us looking for a brick to make the new development stand out. They chose two bricks; one for houses, and one for apartments.

The bricks

The Calderwood claret was used for the houses. While similar to classic red brick, the Calderwood matches contemporary styles. It keeps a clean wire-cut finish while offering a rougher texture. It uses red and orange shades, seamlessly blending them.

The apartments used the Adlington Multi, another wire-cut brick with a rough, sand-faced finish. This blend contains several shades, from light reds to roasted browns and faded black tones.

The wirecut style gives builds a sleek and modern look, while the sandface finish gives them a textured appearance.

Manchester at its heart

As always, we love taking the opportunity to work on local projects. Manchester is a great city and is constantly being developed. Being a part of that journey is something we strive for.

Every area of this project’s development had ties to Manchester too. The architects in charge of design were the Astley-based Grays Architecture. Stockport’s Mangrove Developments were also responsible for the construction.

The scheme, developed in partnership with Salford City Council, was made possible with £3.1m funding from Homes England and nearly £700,000 from the Greater Manchester Brownfield Fund (GMBF).

Made with affordability in mind

Another reason we loved working on this project was ForHousing’s commitment to affordable housing. Since the 1980s, the availability of affordable housing has decreased, which is one reason for the housing crisis the UK is facing.

Many people have misconceptions that affordable housing is of a lower quality. By building with high-quality bricks, opinions will change, and affordable housing will be considered as a viable solution.

The final results look incredible. The apartment’s lighter, tanned appearance in clear sunlight is striking. The homes have that classic family home look while still looking modern and new.

This brick I wanted is seen across London and the South East and has a history dating back 300 years, meaning I had a match for the historical context of the build.

Mike Donovan, Client

In terms of kerb appeal the final product is a characterful brick-built design that is consistent across each build.

The Mottram Multi provided the bungalow with an anchor in local heritage and respected the history of Bubwith.

Mark Dickinson, Customer

The brick provided the builds with an imposing presence, without it losing the ever-so important homely feel.
